Since the 16th century, France has had a presence in French Guiana, yet French Guiana became a Formal French Colony in 1946 when French Guiana became a far French Department. Currently, French Guiana has the status of a Single Territorial Collectivity of France, which runs under the Assembly of French Guiana.
