Northern Mariana Islands has been a Colony of the USA since the end of WWII following the defeat of Japan. More specifically, Northern Mariana Islands was a Colony of Spain from 1521 until 1899 when Spain sold Northern Mariana Islands to Germany, but Northern Mariana Islands became part of Japan following the defeat of Germany in WWI, still, Northern Mariana Islands became part of USA following the defeat of Japan in WWII. However, Northern Mariana Islands was a non-self-governing territory of USA until 1990, while since then, the Northern Mariana Islands has been a colony of the USA under the status of Unincorporated and Commonwealth of the United States namely, Unincorporated Territories are not integral parts of the USA, so each territory has a self-governing that includes the Governor, the Cabinet and Territorial Legislature.
