Since 1648 under the Treaty of Concordia, France and Netherlands split the the island of Saint Martin, so since then, Saint Martin is a colony of France, while Sint Maarten is a colony of Netherlands. Currently, Saint Martin has a status of Overseas Collectivity under the sovereignty of France namely, President of France is the Chief of State of Saint Martin that appointed the Prefect who control the actions of the local authorities, still, Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy has one shared representative in the French Senate.
