Mayotte, France

From 1500 until 1843, Mayotte was an Independent Country under a Maore Sultanate (Sultans of Mayotte) excluding the years of 1832-1836 when Mayotte was under occupation. However, in 1841, Mayotte was purchased by France, and two years later, in 1843, France abolished the Sultanate, and since then, Mayotte has been a colony of France. Currently, Mayotte has the status of a Single Territorial Collectivity of France under the Departmental Council of Mayotte, which includes a Deliberative Assembly and an Executive Council.
