20 May 2022 at 17:48. I always say that what’s important is what comes after the BUT.

Germany-Qatar partnership is Nice to have, BUT:

  • It will start in 2024, so Winter 2022-2023 is still under ‘cold unclear’.

  • Buying LNG gas from a distance it’s much more expensive than gas pipeline due to transportation by sea via LNG carriers or by land via tanker trucks or railway tankers and because of that, Merkel made the deal of NORD 2 with Putin to decrease the gas costs for Germany.

  • The route of the LNG carrier by sea from Qatar to Germany is supposed to be via Suez Canal, yet there is a risk for a blockade of this route as it already happened in the past, so the route could be much longer via Cape of Good Hope. See below.

  • To reduce the LNG gas cost, Germany needs to obligate for 20 years contract with Qatar, yet it will be higher than NORD 2.
