Saba has been a Colony of the Netherlands since the 1640s when the Dutch West India Company tried to start its trade activity in Saba, but pirates hinder the Dutch settlement in Saba has became permanently only in the start of the 19th century due to pirates assaults. Saba was part of the Netherlands Antilles from 1954 until 2010 when it was dissolved. Following that, in 2011, Saba started to use the US Dollar as its formal currency instead of the Euro like in the Netherlands. Currently, Saba has the status of a special municipality of the Netherlands namely, Saba has an elected local parliament, the Island Council, but does not have an elected Premier, and instead, Saba runs by a Governor that appointed by Netherlands, which acted as the head of the Central Committee and the Island Council.
