25 September 2022 at 07:47. The West sees India as an important ally, but times have changed in India. If we look closely at how India handles minorities, protests and freedom, then India is under a regime transformation from an almost full democracy to half democracy. Besides, India understood that its location is far from the West to rely on the West for the growth of India, so in the last decade, India has started to shift its trade from the West to the East by joining the alliances BRICS and SCO that are part of Russia and China coalition. Thus, currently, Indiaś growth depends heavily on trade with the East, namely trade with the Russia-China coalition, rather than with the West coalition. Importantly, at the geopolitical level, since the start of the Ukraine war, India has chosen to assist Russia. First, India did not impose sanctions against Russia. Second, in the UN security council about Ukraine immediately after the invasion, then India abstained (Abstain is a soft opposition). Third, India even abstained in the vote to stop the Russian invasion in the UN General Assembly, as well as in the vote of the Human Right Council of UNGA about the suspension of Russia from HRC. Fourth, when the West sanctions started to hit Russia, then India started to help Russia by buying its oil even in roubles. Hence, India has chosen a side, the East over the West, based on its location, regime transformation and change in the global order, yet as time passes, this process will be more visible, still, the West did not internalize this process, so the West still plays with the idea that India is a West ally.
